If you have lived in Tomball for more than a season, you already know the rhythm of fall here. The model trains come out at the Depot. The Bluegrass Festival brings out lawn chairs. Somewhere between Halloween and the tree lighting, the whole town seems to migrate to Market Street on foot.
What is different in 2026 is the second anchor. The Grand at 249 corridor has quietly turned into a parallel destination, and the sequence of restaurant openings this year is changing where residents actually eat before and after a Depot Plaza night. This piece maps both anchors against the fall calendar so you can plan the season without the guesswork.
The Depot Plaza dates worth putting on the fridge
The city's 2026 fall lineup is dense, and most of it happens on the same three-acre stretch of downtown around 201 S. Elm St. Free admission, free parking, and the events cluster on Saturdays.

A quick heads-up on Depot Day: Community Impact's 2026 roundup lists Depot Day Fall Fest as Nov. 7, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., while the city's own event page has previewed a Depot Day Fall Fest starting at 11 a.m. on Nov. 16. If you are planning to bring visiting family, confirm the date on tomballtx.gov the week of, because both sources are official.
The Spooktacular on Oct. 10 shares its date with a 2nd Saturday movie night. If you have young kids, you can do face painting and bounce houses at 4, then move a hundred yards over for the movie at dusk without ever leaving the Depot Plaza.
The 18th Annual German Christmas Market is the anchor of the whole calendar. The event offers a wide range of festive fun for the whole family, from vendors and live music to food and contests, running Dec. 11 from 6–10 p.m., Dec. 12 from 10 a.m.–10 p.m., and Dec. 13 from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. This is when the town's German heritage stops being a footnote and takes over three full days of downtown.
What actually changed around The Grand at 249 this year
Here is the shift most residents have felt but not quite catalogued. The Grand at 249 is a 65-acre mixed-use development at the intersection of Highway 249 and the Grand Parkway (SH 99), and the tenant mix that filled in between late 2025 and mid-2026 has changed what you can grab on the way home.
The openings so far:
- Black Bear Diner opened Oct. 30 at the 249 and Grand Parkway intersection. Black Bear Diner serves customers all-day breakfast, along with lunch and dinner options. If your Depot Day morning starts at 11, this is a workable 9 a.m. staging point.
- Bamburger opened Dec. 17, 2025. The restaurant offers a variety of smash burgers in beef or chicken alongside items such as chicken tenders with fries. Locations in both Tomball and Spring, useful if you are coming in from either direction.
- Chick-fil-A Grand Pkwy at Tomball Pkwy opened June 25, 2026. Located at 25527 Tomball Pkwy, it serves guests Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., offering dine-in, drive-thru, carry-out, third-party delivery, and Mobile Thru. Cindy Smith is the local Owner-Operator, marking her second restaurant in the community.
Still under construction as of this writing:
- Olive Garden is targeting a mid-August 2026 opening at The Grand at 249. The chain broke ground at 27651 Tomball Parkway on an estimated $3.5 million construction project that began in late January 2026 and is expected to be completed by mid-August 2026, delivering a 7,828-square-foot full-service restaurant with a fresh build complete with a new parking lot, landscaping, and utilities.
- The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill is aiming for a late-fall arrival. Construction for the new Tomball-area location started in June and will be completed by November, per the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, with the restaurant occupying a 2,000-square-foot building. If the timeline holds, that puts a Mediterranean option in play right around the Holiday Parade weekend.
- Carrabba's Italian Grill is a 2027 story, not a 2026 one. The Houston-founded restaurant is opening at 13215 N Grand Parkway W within The Grand at 249, with construction expected to begin in June 2026 and completion anticipated by March 2027, a $2.75 million project bringing a 5,242-square-foot standalone restaurant to northwest Harris County.
- Portillo's is confirmed. The Chicago chain has said its Tomball spot will feature a spacious dining room, seasonal patio, and its signature double drive-thru lanes, serving Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, burgers, and the Chocolate Cake Shake.
The Chick-fil-A gap you should know about
If Chick-fil-A is part of your family's Friday routine, mark this one. The 249 at Jones Road location temporarily closed beginning June 12, 2026, to rebuild the restaurant, and is scheduled to reopen in December 2026, pending any delays.
That means for most of the fall calendar above, the closest option is the new Grand Pkwy at Tomball Pkwy store. The practical effect during Depot Day or the German Christmas Market weekend is a longer wait than usual at the newer location, because it is absorbing the Jones Road traffic through the busiest three months of the year. If you are picking up a family order between Spooktacular and the movie, plan for it.
Where residents are actually eating this fall
The Depot Plaza has never really had a bad walk-to option, and that has not changed. The stretch of downtown north of the tracks still holds up for a pre-parade breakfast or a post-market glass of something German. What has changed is what happens when you drive back south.
Two years ago, the answer between Depot and Grand Parkway was thin. Now the corridor from downtown out to 99 is filling in, and the practical result is that a Depot Plaza event is no longer a full-evening commitment if you did not want it to be. You can catch the Bluegrass Festival's afternoon set, then be at Bamburger or Black Bear Diner within fifteen minutes. Come the November parade, an Olive Garden reservation should be in the picture if the mid-August completion date holds.
For anyone who follows the small-vendor side of the local food scene, Grazeables represented Tomball in Eat Drink HTX Feb. 15–28, 2026, a Greater Houston food event that raises funds for the Houston Food Bank through two-course meals at participating casual and fast-casual restaurants. The shop is transitioning to a new Magnolia location opening in 2026, per their website, so if you have been meaning to try their charcuterie in Tomball itself, this is the season to do it.
Stringing the season together

- Second Saturday in October (Oct. 10) stacks the most in one night: Spooktacular from 4 to 8, movie night from 5 to 9. Eat before you come. Bamburger or Black Bear Diner both handle a 3 p.m. early dinner.
- Depot Day weekend (Nov. 7 or Nov. 16 depending on which source holds) is a full-day event. This is the day to walk downtown for lunch instead of driving out to the corridor.
